Telling Your Story

Central to our mission is the breaking down of all financial barriers to attendance. SAY: DC is dedicated to providing our award-winning programming completely free of charge.

This workshop draws upon the best-loved elements of our American Camp Association accredited two-week sleep-away camp and combines them with the magic of our award-winning Confident Voices program to create a new and groundbreaking project.

Every week, a group of young people who stutter will meet to share experiences that are designed to unleash their natural storytelling ability. Our expert staff (led by SAY: DC Co-Founders, Taro Alexander and Leigh Pennebaker) will encourage participants to mine their imaginations to create original art. Over the course of the academic year, we will explore different modes of expression that will help participants tell their stories.

Underlying everything will be the Camp SAY “cabin effect”: the transformative experience of being part of a tight-knit team — a diverse group that shares the commonality of being young people who stutter. This will be a group of friends that feels like family and knows how to listen to and support each other. Utilizing the rich cultural and historical offerings of Washington, DC and the surrounding area, we will engage in fun group outings that inspire, illuminate, and spark our creativity. At key points during the year, we will bring in the Kid and Pre-Teen groups to allow for a wider range of mentorships and collaborations, and special Guest Artists will visit to conduct master classes. Our creative year will lead to an opportunity to share what we have done with the rest of the SAY: DC community and our families.

Activities may include acting, bookmaking, dance, drawing, drumming, field trips, painting, photography, playwriting, poetry, printmaking, sculpture, songwriting, singing, and more.

SAY: DC is centrally located in the vibrant Golden Triangle, just two blocks from the Farragut North and Dupont Circle Metro Stations. Our open and expansive studio space is awash with natural light and stunning views of the city. It is a place for the SAY: DC community to feel welcomed and inspired.

1:00-4:00 pm Saturdays, October-June. 13-18 year olds. SAY: DC studio.

Note: due to ongoing COVID-19 precautions, all of our programs are currently online and take place via Zoom. SAY: DC continues to closely monitor updates and follow the guidelines put in place by Federal, State, and City government and health departments.
